How do AM radio stations broadcast information? ›

A transmitter radiates this field outward via an antenna; a receiver then picks up the field and translates it to the sounds heard through the radio. In AM (Amplitude Modulation) radio, the strength (amplitude) of the signal is changed (modulated) to make the sounds.

Radio is a way to send electromagnetic signals over a long distance, to deliver information from one place to another. A machine that sends radio waves is called a transmitter, while a machine that "picks up" the signals is called a receiver or antenna. A machine that does both jobs is a "transceiver".

Radio is sound communication by radio waves, usually through the transmission of music, news, and other types of programs from single broadcast stations to multitudes of individual listeners equipped with radio receivers.

Recently, some major auto manufacturers announced plans to stop including AM radios in new vehicles, contending electric vehicle motor systems cause interference with reception, making stations unlistenable and, thus, the AM band obsolete.

Both internet and terrestrial radio stations track audience size using devices called Portable People Meters or Nielsen Meters, a couple of basic radio terms to know.

The modulated carrier is amplified and applied to an antenna. The oscillating current pushes the electrons in the antenna back and forth, creating oscillating electric and magnetic fields, which radiate the energy away from the antenna as radio waves. The radio waves carry the information to the receiver location.

Radio broadcasts provide real-time information, and some that broadcast 24 hours a day, can provide the most recent updates to listeners.

How do FM radio stations transmit information? ›

In FM broadcasting, the frequency of the carrier wave is modulated to encode the sound. A radio receiver extracts the original program sound from the modulated radio signal and reproduces the sound in a loudspeaker.

The electrical signal from program material, usually coming from a studio, is mixed with a carrier wave of a specific frequency, then broadcast. In the case of AM, this mixing (modulation) is done by altering the amplitude (strength) of the carrier wave, proportional to the original signal.

An AM radio receiver is relatively straightforward. Use an antenna to supply a voltage to a resonating RLC circuit. The resonance frequency of the circuit matches the carrier wave frequency of the radio station you want to listen to, so the circuit picks that signal out from all the other stations.

In radio transmission, electromagnetic power from a radio transmitter is coupled by the transmitter antenna into air or free space. In radio reception, electromagnetic radio waves are intercepted by a receiving antenna and coupled into a receiver for detection.

Unlike a cell tower, which is only a support for the attached cell antennas, the entire AM tower structure radiates signal as the AM radio station's antenna. Since the tower structure is radiating the AM signal, an AM tower is often referred to as “hot”.
