What is ‘English for Tourism’? An Updated ‘Grounded Review’ of the Literature

This paper reports the results of a replication of an exploratory study conducted five years earlier that sought to answer the deceptively simple question: 'What is English for Tourism?'. The original study created a corpus of 348 texts that served as a representative sample of all EfT literature available on Google Books and Google Scholar at the time, including both teaching material and academic literature. A qualitative analysis, which categorized and coded the corpus in accordance with grounded theory, revealed two categories of teaching material-those written for local markets and those written for international markets-as well as two parallel research traditions within this niche of applied linguistics: studies that aim to understand and inform the teaching and learning of English for tourism (EfT) and studies that seek to understand and explain the English of tourism (EoT). A quantitative analysis using Microsoft Excel and the free concordancer LancsBox confirmed and qualified these thematic categories via a comparative analysis of the EfT and EoT sub-corpora. The present study employed the same sampling frame to update the existing corpus with 543 texts published or made accessible online over the last five years. The same mixed-methods data analyses were performed on the expanded corpus. The results of the replication reconfirm the semantic, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological differences and interdependencies between EfT and EoT found during the first study. The results also reveal recent shifts in international and national discourses and expose further gaps in the existing body of literature.

Modern form of alternative tourism, genealogic tourism experiences a period of prosperity at regional level in a multicultural space as it is the Banat area from Romania and contributes to sustainable development of this area, where more and more travel agents include in the packages offered for sale offers for trips for German and Austrian tourists whose ancestors have lived on these lands. The purpose of travel is the discovering of the German roots, knowledge of the great writers of German literature, customs and traditions, the schools, churches with specific architectural style, post headquarters, specific households, the traditional architecture of living spaces, the crafts practiced and popular costumes, baroque monuments from common market. The use of these anthropic resources in tourism, in general, contributes to the sustainable development of these multicultural areas causing the development of genealogical tourism as a form of niche tourism.

The overall evolution of the economy is usually appreciated by two macroeconomic indicators GDP and GVA, which by their value gives us clear information on the state of the economy. Sustainable agriculture development has been recently much concerned. In this context “sustainability†can be defined as a way by which biological systems remain different and productive. Namely, it advocates reduction or completely exclusion of synthetic chemical agents. Since this production system , generally designated as sustainable or organic farming, has become world wide trend its terminology analysis requirement has been occurred. Due to the fact that agriculture sustainability originated from English speaking countries terms for new notions in the Croatian language have been mostly borrowed from the English language. English borrowings in the context of the sustainable agriculture will be analysed in this paper aiming to determine structure and meaning of the terms as well as possible replacement by the domestic (Croatian) terms. This will both make easier understanding such terminology to our students and contribute to the Croatian language standard concern.
